Pig Tracking That Holds Through Bog and Submerged Pipeline

Overview

A Louisiana pipeline operator needed to track pigs through bog terrain where long sections of line ran underwater. Limited access, unstable ground, and shifting water levels made conventional tracking unreliable. For this task our client deployed our APEX Above Ground Markers (AGMs) and PigView software to deliver consistent, real-time visibility through the full run.

The Challenge

Bog terrain is one of the toughest environments for pig tracking. Saturated ground, standing water, and tidal shifts interfere with signal clarity and limit access. Parts of the pipeline were fully submerged. Crews had to deploy by airboat, and rising water and waves delayed installation while putting equipment at risk.

Traditional tracking methods fall short in these conditions. This job needed a system that could hold detection without constant physical verification.

The Solution

The crew deployed 36 APEX AGM units along the pipeline, configured for challenging signal conditions. PigView Web paired with the hardware so the team could monitor pig movement and detections in real time.

For the water‑heavy sections, external EM antennas were lowered closer to the pipe – close enough to pull a clean signal through standing water.

Because APEX adapts across frequencies, it also worked cleanly alongside the third‑party transmitters already on the job.

Implementation in the Field

AGMs were mounted on elevated platforms fixed to stable structures along the route, so rising and falling water levels didn’t compromise placement.

Crews monitored detections remotely through PigView Web, cutting trips to difficult and unsafe locations. Pig progress could be confirmed without leaving the truck.

Where conditions shifted, the team adjusted, raising equipment for tide changes and repositioning antennas to keep signal stable.

“Passage was confirmed with confidence. Uncertainty dropped. Delays were avoided. Operators made calls based on real‑time data, not guesswork.”

Results

The system held detection through the full run, including sections where the pipeline was underwater.

Passage was confirmed with confidence. Uncertainty dropped. Delays were avoided. Operators made calls based on real‑time data, not guesswork.

Key Takeaways

Submerged and low‑access conditions add real risk to pipeline operations. With the right combination of hardware and software, crews can maintain full visibility, even where conventional tracking breaks down.
